SOME PAINT ON CARDBOARD

48″ x 44″ Mixed Media on Cardboard

An old piece of cardboard.  Old house paint.  New color swatches from Home Depot.  I glued down the swatches to start this project.  After they were arranged the way I wanted them to be, I began to carve into the spaces of cardboard that remained.  Finally, I added my circles and splatters to top it off.

CHANT DOWN

11″ x 12″ Mixed Media on Wood

Babylon is all around us.  It is the government.  It is the various systems that are in place trying to govern our existence to fit certain molds.  Consumerism, material wealth, politricks, money and more, are these the things that really matter today?  They were put in place to put the people in their place.  Chant dem down!  Sing the songs of revolution and inform the people that we do not need these systems.  We need to live off the land and be free!  Chant dem down!  Don’t be a victim of the system anymore.  Chant dem down with the sounds of reggae music!  Jah Live!

BOX TOPS

48″ x 48″ Mixed Media on Burlap

Tissue boxes and burlap.  I see the tops of tissue boxes.  But the tops of tissue boxes are not or cannot be art right?  I think they can.  Burlap.  Say it again… burlap.  Now look at it.  Burlap.  It doesn’t look like a word anymore.  Well it is and I’ve got a bunch of it to use as my canvas.  I like the texture of burlap.  Kinda vintage or natural looking.  Bur-lap. Burlap. B u r l a p.

THIS LIFE

10″ x 10″ Mixed Media on Paper

Why are we all here in the universe?  Why are some people more well-off than others?  Why can I make art?  Why can’t I stop making art?  Why aren’t all people good?  The list of life’s questions goes on for eternity and we’re all here trying to figure them out.  Don’t worry… about a thing… cuz… you know the rest, I think :)

WRONG WAY TURTLE

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media on Canvas

This little turtle is headed the wrong way, or he is just a rebel, or he is just a turtle and doesn’t really pay attention to things like directional arrows.  Maybe there is no turtle.  Anyways, I made him with some house paint (the background) and some spray paint (the black designs).  I placed some plastic and wooden shapes in specific spots on my canvas and let the paint flow.

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Omega Bond

Taking care of the morning business gives you some time to think about things.  For me, I looked at the Charmin and thought… what can I do with this,  I think I will try spray painting individual sheets and see if they will stick to Omega Bond when they dry.  Well they did and it gave me the background for this piece.  Thank goodness there’s a Costco in town.

PAINT SAMPLE FLOWERS

16″ x 20″ Mixed Media on Canvas

I’m in the Home Depot a lot lately.  Searching the aisles for different shapes I can find to use in my work.  The plumbing section is always a good one for this.  More recently staring me in the face were the paint swatch samples.  Thanks to Home Depot for all of the free paint swatches.  I will be stocking up on as much of your free “supplies” as I can in order to keep creating new art.

HANDYMAN

10″ x 10″ Mixed Media on Paper

This is my hand.  This is my drawing.  This hand drew this man.  I dipped this hand down into the paint and pressed it against the paper.  After it was dry I drew this man over it.  The letter “y” means “and” in Spanish.  Hence the name Handyman (hand y man).  Hand and man.  I guess I could have went with Manoyhombre as well.

COLOR CHECK

12″ x 12″ Mixed Media on Canvas

Like The Color Marsh, I took this canvas to the studio floor first.  After mushing it into the paint I was left with the colors.  Then I took a grip pad that normal people use to keep their runners in place and laid it over my canvas.  Finally, I sprayed it with some black spray paint for the checkered pattern.

MAYAN MOTHER SHIP

16″ x 20″ Mixed Media on Canvas

It looks like a Mayan design.  It looks like the bottom of a spaceship.  Maybe it’s both.  I’ve heard a couple of ideas from the people I’ve shown this to so far.  If the Mayans are right then I have to be prepared to sacrifice this for them.  Here is my gift to the new world.  I hope it will suffice.

NEVER KNOWN BUT MISSED

8.5″ x 11″ Mixed Media on Water Color Paper

I had just finished watching Jean-Michel Basquiat The Radiant Child by Tamara Davis and I had to make something as soon as it was over.  I made a pair of tribute sneakers in Baquiat’s honor in my first week and now had to try my hand at his style.  Most people hate it.  They look at it and scream that it is not art.  But what is art?  Personally I love his work and am a huge fan of his.  Maybe my next attempt will be in his style, but on a much larger scale like the way he worked.  I even let my 2 year old niece (Grace) throw down some lines on this one.

IS THIS CLEAR

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Omega Bond

This has to be my least favorite thing that I have made so far. I know this isn’t so clear to see, but you can see the clear paint used in it right?  After making the All White piece I wanted to take it to the next level and go clear.  What is next after this?  Clear paint on glass perhaps.  Perhaps not, but we’ll see.

THE COLOR MARSH

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Omega Bond

I took a piece of Omega Bond and mushed it down in the colors of paint on my studio floor that were left over while making a different painting.  I let it dry and added the grid and lines. I think it looks like a marshy area near a pond or lake.

TAN BACKGROUND

24″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Acrylic

Tanning is not good for you unless it’s part of a painting.  I feel like I’m running out of ideas for names for my paintings that I use circles in.  That could be a problem since it is kind of my thing.  I guess I’ll just have to get more creative with the titles as I go along.  Or maybe ask you guys for more help…
