MAKE THE CONNECTION

10″ x 10″ Mixed Media on Paper

This one started with a spray painted background on paper.  Then I took these color samples (for matte board) and stuck them down onto the page.  Next, I sat in the living room drawing, writing and watching TV with my wife, my brother Matt & our friend Joe.  While we were hanging out I would ask what is the first thing that comes to mind when I say light blue?  What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say toaster? And so on and so on until I thought it was finished.  This is a mash up of their trains of thought.  Do you follow them or do you think of something else?

COCK-A-DOODLE DOODLE

11″ x 15″ Pen & Marker on Watercolor Paper

Rise up this mornin’.  Yawn with the rising sun.  There is a bird, that’s in my mind set.  Singin’ sweet songs, to me to get me out of bed.  And get images into my head, head, head…  Singin’ start drawing… everything.  Cuz everything you draw… is gonna be just right.  Singin’ start drawing… everything.  Cuz everything you draw… is gonna be just right.  Rise up this mornin’.  I got a pen in hand.  I got some paper and markers too.  I’m gonna draw now, draw now for all of you, you, you… Singin’ start drawing… everything.  Cuz everything you draw… is gonna be just right.  Singin’ start drawing… everything.  Cuz everything you draw… is gonna be just right.  ~my take on Three Little Birds

THE PRINCE

11″ x 15″ Pen & Marker on Watercolor Paper

Now I see his face. I’ve seen him smile. Such in a lonely place. No golden mile, his eyes tell morbid tales of his black heart. His deeds through ages past tell of his part.
See his face, see his smile Time to die
An angel from below change my dreams. I want for glory’s hour, for wealth’s esteem. I wish to sell my soul. To be reborn. I wish for earthly riches, don’t want no crown of thorns.
See his face, see his smile Time to die
I was born a fool. Don’t want to stay that way. Devil take my soul with diamonds you repay. I don’t care for Heaven. Don’t you look for me to cry and I will burn in Hell from the day I die.
See his face, see his smile Time to die  ~Metallica

PORTALS

11″ x 15″ Marker & Pen on Paper

What would you do if there were portals that would let you travel back in time?  Would you go back and win the lottery?  Would you make sure you got all A’s in school?  Maybe re-live a moment in time a little bit differently?  Or maybe not use the portals at all?  Maybe everything that is happening now is happening for a reason and it doesn’t need to be changed.  Maybe this was written?  Maybe…

SURF RIDER

“…there was purity and there was the dream, and the adventure, and there was the counterculture aspect. It was like shove society, shove the nine to five, shove the rules… we’re just going to follow our hearts, treat each other well, eat well and enjoy the ocean. It was not for money and it wasn’t for fame… that’s what we’re gonna do… purely because that’s what our hearts want to do. That was amazing.”  -Jim Banks (quote from the Switch-foot book)

LIFE IS HAZEY

11″ x 15″ Pen & Prismacolor on Watercolor Paper

We only get one while we’re here and we can’t even remember most of the beginning parts.  What was I thinking about when I was in those first few years?  How were all of these things around me shaping the person I am today?  There are such high hopes for you when you are brand new.  Did my mother know that when she gave me a piece of paper and a box of crayons that it would turn into this?

BY MY DOORSTEP

11″ x 15″ Marker & Pen on Watercolor Paper

I know you’ve seen these little birds on a canvas already, but I had to finish off the sketch.  Not to mention, I think these guys are pretty cool and I love the song.  So, I hope you all have a good day and if anything is bothering you maybe it really isn’t that big of a deal.

JOHNNY

11″ x 15″ Drawing on Watercolor Paper

Johnny was a good manWoman hold her head and cry, ’cause her son had been shot down in the street and died, from a stray bullet.  Woman hold her head and cry. Explaining to her was a passerby, who saw the woman cry. Wondering how can she work it out?  Now she knows that the wages of sin is death, yeah! Gift of Jah is life. She cried, “Ah-um, I – I know! Johnny was a good man, I – I know!  Never did a thing wrong, Johnny was a good, good, good, good, good, good, good, good, Good, good, good man”, Johnny was good man, she cried – she crie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ie-ied!

BIFF

8.5″ x 11″ Digital Image and Drawing

Biff.  A great name for a bully.  Who can forget the movie Back to the Future and the character Biff Tannen?  He was the classic bully and was brought to life by actor Thomas F. Wilson.  There’s a piece of movie trivia for ya.  He also played Griff Tannen in Back to the Future II and Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen in Back to the Future III.  This isn’t a drawing of him, but he sure looks like a Biff to me.

WHAT I WANTED

11″ x 15″ Mixed Media on Watercolor Paper

This is not what I wanted to draw.  This is not what I wanted to paint.  Or is it?  Is it the other way around?  This is what I wanted to draw.  This is what I wanted to paint.  I don’t know which I wanted to do or not do, but this is what I came up with.

THIS LIFE

10″ x 10″ Mixed Media on Paper

Why are we all here in the universe?  Why are some people more well-off than others?  Why can I make art?  Why can’t I stop making art?  Why aren’t all people good?  The list of life’s questions goes on for eternity and we’re all here trying to figure them out.  Don’t worry… about a thing… cuz… you know the rest, I think :)

QUIET

8.5″ x 11″ Pen on Paper & Digital Image

I did’t know who she was or where she was from.  I couldn’t tell if those were henna designs or tattoos on here skin.  Maybe I was just dreaming.  Maybe there was never anyone there.  But I know I’ve seen you somewhere before.  Maybe just not in this life.

MONKEY SEE

8.5″ x 11″ Pen on Paper & Digital Image

I was sitting and relaxing in the hotel room in Asheville, NC after filming a wedding and staring at this picture on the wall from across the room.  I knew it was a picture of flowers, but from where I was sitting I saw something much different.  I saw a monkey.  So, I start sketching him out.  The petals were his ear & leg and the space between the petals were his eyes & body.  I still see him in the flowers every time I look.

HANDYMAN

10″ x 10″ Mixed Media on Paper

This is my hand.  This is my drawing.  This hand drew this man.  I dipped this hand down into the paint and pressed it against the paper.  After it was dry I drew this man over it.  The letter “y” means “and” in Spanish.  Hence the name Handyman (hand y man).  Hand and man.  I guess I could have went with Manoyhombre as well.
