I’m really getting into making these faces. I love that they are simple shapes all meshed together to create something. It’s kind of how Chuck Close works. By no means am I comparing myself to Chuck. His work is simple shapes up close and then when you stand back the images appear. My drawings are not on the same scale as his are, but are similar in the way that they evolve.
DRIFTER

If you know who Rob Machado (my half brother, I think) is then this might remind you of him. It reminded me of him and that is why I call this piece Drifter. Rob starred in the movie The Drifter as himself and for a surfer playing a surfer did a great job. If you haven’t seen it it’s worth the time in my opinion. Anyways, if anyone out there knows Rob and sees this, I ask that you share it with him and let him know that I am still in search of and want to meet my half brother.

At the start of this drawing I was just scribbling some shapes down in red Sharpie and seeing where it would go. I drew a few black lines off of one of the shapes and thought it resembled a building so I ran with it and created this this little city.

Those of you that are familiar with Keith Haring will probably think that this drawing resembles his work. Those of you that like his work will probably like this drawing. Those of you that are still reading this are probably wondering how many more times I will write “those of you” or “probably” in this paragraph. I’ll probably only write those of you this last time.

Another meeting at work and an artist named Sam Flores brought me this masked man. Sam is a true master at what he creates. He draws and paints people with masks in some of his work and I was inspired by it. I love the way these drawings come out and will probably try painting one in the future.
WINDY

I drew the blue background a while back and forgot about it. I was going to toss it out, but then decided to scribble some lines down and ended up with this. It reminds me of a very windy day or a tornado.
LOOKING DOWN

Drawing in morning meetings at work is a good place to get new ideas. I know I was supposed to be taking notes, but all I could come up with was this. I like to draw on lined paper. It lets me use the lines as guides while laying down my own lines. Next meeting I’ll try and take better notes… I mean make a better drawing.

Sharpie on Adidas
Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of my favorite artists of all time. One may look at his work and say, “that is not art.” Yeah, well you know, uh, that’s just like… your opinion man. I love his style and that he made what he wanted to make. He could have painted a bunch of “perfect” looking pieces and maybe they would have made it onto some hotel room walls, but he didn’t. Basquiat painted some perfect pieces and took the art world by the throat. This is my tribute to him.
THE KING

I get a lot of my ideas when I doodle. This may seem like a bit more than just a doodle, but really it’s not. I made this at several of the airports while K-Lee and I were waiting… and waiting… and… you guessed it, waiting… to get on our flights to and from North Carolina. A cancelled flight and many delays later I was done doodling and we finally made it home.
