ON MY LIPS

26″ x 37″ Mixed Media on Paper

“I want to be a lost poem in a stranger’s coat pocket, that conveys the importance of you. To assure you of my desire, to assure you of dreams. I want all the possibilities of you in writing. I want to give you your reflection, I want your eyes on me, I want to travel to the lightness with you and stay there, and I want everything before you to follow us like a trail behind me. I want never to say goodbye to you, even on the street corner or the phone. I want, I want so much… I’m breathless. I want to put my power into a poem to burn a hole in your pocket so I can sew it. I want my words to scream through you. I want the poem not to mean that much. And I want to contradict myself by accident, and for you to know what I mean. I want you to be distant and for me to feel you close, I want endless days when it’s day and nighttime never to end when it’s night. I want all the seasons in one day. I want the sun to set before us and come up in front of us. I want water up to our waists and to be drenched by the rain, up to our ankles with holes in our shoes. I want to think your thoughts because they’re mine. I want only what’s urgent with you. I want to get in the way of the barriers and I want you to be a tough guy when you’re supposed to, like you do already. And I want you to be tender, like you do already. And I want us to have met for a reason and I want that reason to be important. And I want it to be bigger than us, I want it to take over us. I want to forget. I want to remember us. And when you say you love me I don’t want to think you really mean New York City, and all the fun we have in it. And I want your smile always, and your grimaces too. I want your scar on my lips, and I want your disappointments in my heart. I want your strength in my soul and I want your soul in my eyes. I want to believe everything you say, and I do. And I want you to tell me what’s best when I don’t know. And when you’re lost I want to find you. And when you’re weary I want to give you steeples and cathedral thoughts and coliseum dreams. I want to drag you from the darkness and kneel with you exhausted with the blinding light blaring on us… and…”

They say new life makes losing life easier to understand. I like to think that new life is a continuation of a previous one. I feel like the second a person passes on that they are being born again somewhere else in the world. The white light at the end of life is the white light we see in the start of a new one. Maybe that’s why we don’t know much about dying or remember being born. Maybe that’s why we make certain connections with people. They are someone we knew before, but we just don’t know where or when we knew them. So yeah, maybe new life does make losing life easier to understand. Or maybe it just makes it even more confusing…

SHINE ON

11″ x 15″ Marker on Watercolor Paper

Shine on brightness of days to come. You are the sun on the new horizon of my life. Thoughts of me evaporate into thoughts of you. New reasons to exist light my passion. Feelings taken over by feelings in a continuous loop. Your face in my dreams is beautiful. Your heart in my hands is to love. Your soul on this earth is to die for.

HOLY TRINITY

18″ x 18″ Mixed Media on Wood

There is something out there and we can’t figure it out. Some people believe and some filled with doubt? Is it the father, the son, holy ghost? Or monkeys up there putting on a show? Hard to keep faith with questions unanswered. Family and friends taken by sickness and cancers. The poor and the hungry, the lost and the hurt. How will the meek inherit the earth? Asked to believe without any proof. Seek for yourself and you’ll find your truth. The god you pray to will be there for you. The god you pray to will be your truth. Let go of your doubts give in to your faith. One day she’ll call and you’ll be wide awake. When it’s your turn you’ll get the answers you’re after. Your heart will be filled with joy and laughter. But until then just patiently wait. Believe in your god, believe in your faith.

FEELING YOU

18″ x 18″ Mixed Media on Wood

From this world to the next your spirit will live on. Just because you are not here does not mean you’re gone. Your laugh, your smile, your humor and your heart are forever burned into our minds. People that you’ve touched in this life know you’re one of a kind. We will cry, we will mourn, we will ask for reasons why. We will share stories and remember, we’ll be feeling you inside. Good times that we’ve shared will carry us through the days of pain. Forever shine your light down upon us until we meet again.

Give it to the one you love. Give it to a friend. Give it to someone in need. Give it till the end. Give it to your brothers and sisters too. Give it to the people who won’t give it back to you. Love is all we need. Love will set us free. Love is what I’ll give you. Please give it back to me.

VISIONS OF ME

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Omega Bond

Am I pretty enough? Am I everything you dreamed I would be? Am I living up to all of your visions of me? Do you still like the way that I smile? Do you still want to sit and chat about nothing for a while? Do you want to linger in my company? Do I live up to your visions of me? Are you hurting deep down inside crying there on the floor? Are you fed up? Are you ready to walk out that door? Did I shatter your image of what you thought I would be? Did I shatter all of your expectations and visions of me? I hope not. I Hope that I didn’t. I hope that you’ll see. That I have lived up to all of your visions of me.

PRETTY WHEN YOU SMOKE

24″ x 48″ Mixed Media on Wood

See you on the corner, just came off the bus. Usually pass right by without making a fuss. Something in the way the smoke swirls around your face could change the whole feeling of this place. Or maybe it’s the way you talk ending sentences with laughter. Or maybe it’s a mystery that will be solved after. Not really sure at all, it seems like it’s a joke. But there’s something that makes you pretty when you smoke.

NIGHT DANCER

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Omega Bond

Chains break in the darkness of the midnight hour. Held down no more, running for freedom, running for life. Hidden in the bush from firefly lights and cricket wing fights. Cold ground was her bed last night and rock stone was her pillow too. Dreams of better days made mosquito bites feel like soothing back rubs. High tide and sun rays breathe fresh life into the new day. Wake up and live, wake up and dance today. And when you dance in the air of the gift from tonight don’t ever forget what your yesterdays were like.

BABY TREE

11″ x 15″ Markers on Watercolor Paper

What will you look like? Who will you be? Will you stay close or fall far from the tree? I’m sure you’ll have blue eyes, but what will they see? Will you be a writer or an artist like me? Will you dance in the sun? Will you surf in the waves? Will you listen to nature and all that it says? Will you love the music that I listen to? Will the words that you hear influence you? Will you want to go travel and see different worlds? What will you be like my baby girl? My dreams for you are really dreams for me. I know that you’ll be who you’re gonna be. I won’t get my hopes up that you’ll be like me. But I hope that the apple stays close to the tree.

I GAVE MY MOM THE BIRD  (GIFTED)

16″ x 20″ Mixed Media on Canvas

I gave my mom the bird and she started to flip out. I looked at her, she looked at me and began to shout. I couldn’t understand the words coming out her mouth. She started crying and went to sit down on the couch. I never gave my mom the bird before. I gave one at a family party and later gave some more. It’s confusing to me because I always heard… that people get really angry when you give them the bird. But as far as I can see… everyone that I given the bird to gets extremly happy. I guess giving the bird is something that should be done. Hopefully I’ll be able to give the bird to everyone.

BE WITH ME NOW

24″ x 48″ Mixed Media on Wood

Smiles exchanged from across the way turned into heartache and pain. Miss you like the summer on a winter day. Seems like yesterday when I didn’t even know your name. Danced into my life and it will never be the same. Be with me now, you have been from the start. Be with me now, listen to your heart. Don’t let it slip away, don’t let me wait in vain. Don’t let the beauty of your smile be the life behind my pain.

SEPARATE

12″ x 24″ Mixed Media on Wood

Gotta break free, gotta get away, gotta separate. News, media, violence on TV, too much hate. Kill in the name of your god and say that it’s fine. Car bomb, school shooting, what will it be next time? Two people in love can’t get married cause they are gay. Who are we to judge love and say what’s okay? Social media everyday all up in your face. No really thanks I don’t care what you ate today. Soldiers sent to protect this land for the government. Come back home, one less leg, on unemployment. Politician grants a favor looking in your eyes. Turn around take your money, spend it on his lies. Is this really what is meant by being civilized? If it is, then… you can count me out… No one hears our cries… Separate.

FOR KYLE (GIFTED)

8″ x 10″ Oil on Paper

I didn’t think streets like mine existed anymore. There are a lot of kids in my neighborhood. They’re always outside playing games or riding bikes together. It reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in. We are always outside doing something, not sitting in the house all day on the computer or in front of the TV. So, when Kyle and Zack pulled up on their bikes while I was painting and the first thing I hear is whoa! That is so cool! I knew the words “can I have it” were coming next. Sure enough there they were and Kyle had got himself a painting. I’m a sucker for kids what can I say?
